ASHTON, W.Va. — For the second consecutive year on the gridiron, Hannan’s offense posted a season-high in points against Burch.

Unfortunately for the host Wildcats on Friday night, their defense couldn’t quite keep pace with the offense’s output during a 54-20 setback to the Bulldogs in the Week 11 regular season finale for both clubs in Mason County.

Hannan (0-10) churned out 283 yards of total offense — including 254 rushing yards on 57 carries — en route to scoring a season-best three touchdowns in the finale, but the Bulldogs (5-5) extended the hosts’ current losing streak to 14 straight after producing a whopping 429 yards of total offense.

BHS — which lost to Hannan in Week 5 last year by a 36-6 margin — quickly made sure that a repeat outcome did not occur at Wildcat Field on Friday, establishing a 36-8 advantage at the intermission. More impressively, the Bulldogs needed just a dozen offensive plays in the first half to churn out 269 yards of total offense and that comfortable 28-point halftime margin.

The Wildcats — who dressed only 14 players for the Senior Night contest — never led in the contest and never came closer in the second half, despite a touchdown apiece in the third and fourth cantos. The loss also wrapped up a winless 2009 campaign for the Blue and Gold, their first since the 2004 campaign.

Burch established an early 8-0 advantage with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter following a 37-yard scoring run by Thomas Crum. The guests then came up with the only turnover of the night just 1:07 later as Mikie Burke picked off a pass by HHS quarterback Brad Fannin, giving the guests possession at the Hannan 43.

Two plays later, the Bulldogs led 16-0 after Crum hauled in a 4-yard TD pass from Ryan Hatfield at the 4:32 mark.

Hannan retaliated on its ensuing drive, as Robert ‘Pokey’ Warth capped a 5-play, 35-yard drive with a 13-yard TD scamper at 2:29 to pull the hosts to within 16-6.

Burch, however, countered that score with one of its own when Crum hauled in a 29-yard scoring pass from Hatfield with just 17 seconds left in the opener for a 22-8 edge.

Crum increased the guests’ lead to 28-8 with 3:31 remaining in the half on a 7-yard TD run, then gave the Bulldogs a 36-8 cushion with three seconds left before halftime after a 35-yard run to paydirt. It was also the last of Crum’s five touchdowns on the night.

Jacob Butcher started the second half scoring for BHS with an 11-yard jaunt at 8:45 of the third quarter for a 42-8 lead, but Fannin gave the hosts’ their first second half score on the ensuing possession after a 47-yard run on 4th-and-1 made it a 42-14 contest with 5:53 left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs, however, needed just 61 seconds to re-establish a 34-point margin after a 37-yard TD run by Trevor Woolum gave the guests a 48-14 advantage with 4:52 left in the third.

The score stayed that way until the 4:46 mark of the fourth, when Jared Cobb plunged in from six yards out to cut the Hannan deficit to 48-20. Messer Steven, however, concluded the scoring just 19 seconds later with a 54-yard run to the house, making it a 54-20 contest with 4:27 left in regulation.

The Wildcats produced two more first downs (14-12) than the guests and were penalized only six times for 25 yards. Burch was flagged nine times for 75 yards.

Warth led the HHS ground attack with 99 yards on 23 carries, followed by Daniel Reynolds with 95 yards on 10 totes. Fannin — who accumulated 33 rushing yards on 13 carries — went 4-of-7 passing for 29 yards while throwing one interception and zero touchdowns. Reynolds led the wideouts with three catches for 23 yards.

Burch — which had 329 rushing yards on 20 carries, an average of 16.5 yards per carry — was led by Crum with 191 yards on six attempts, followed by Steven with 62 yards on three totes. Hatfield finished the night 5-of-9 passing for 100 yards, with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Dakota Dempsey led the BHS wideouts with one catch for 39 yards.

It was the final football contest for seniors Warth, Cobb, Terry Kauffer and Brandon Waugh in the Blue and Gold.
