POINT PLEASANT — Although the summer season typically means time off from school, many students still like to participate in activities to maintain the skills that they have learned throughout the school year.

And the Pleasant Valley Hospital Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy Departments’ Speech and Sensory Camp was an outlet for children ages three-12 to retain as well as work on various skills. The camp provided children with the opportunity to participate in language enrichment and sensory/fine motor skill development with their peers.

The goals of the camp were vocabulary development, articulation skills, attention and registration to task, peer socialization, sensory integration, fine and gross motor development, written language development/literacy and handwriting. According to Heather Cundiff, MS, CCC-SUP, this was the second year for the Speech and Sensory Camp, and there were more campers this year.

“Camp went wonderfully, “ Cundiff said, adding that the speech therapy and occupational therapy departments intend to offer the camp again next summer.

Campers participated in different themes each week. The themes were our earth — go green, our heroes for the Fourth of July, swamp, Christmas in July, beach week and luau/graduation. According to Jennifer Brown, OTR/L, Christmas in July week was especially fun because Santa Claus visited and brought gifts to the campers. She also said that beach week was enjoyable because campers had the opportunity to participate in a variety of water themed activities.

According to a news release, Debra Long, director of rehabilitation services, described the camp as providing adequate support as needed to promote active engagement and social growth between peers of similar ages and abilities.

Graduating from the Speech and Sensory Camp were Claire Moran, Bryce Curfman, Kayci Michaels, Jesse Underwood, Levi Cicoff, Ben Browning, Adam Polcyn, Kailynn Weaver, Tryston Taylor, Jeremy Young, Xander Ashworth, Elizabeth Cunningham and Waylon Adkins.
