Reader: Why does doctor need to know if I’m armed?

Dear Editor,

I went to the doctor today and was asked to fill out a new form. On one of the items you were supposed to circle all that applied about what was in your house. I was surprised to find “firearms” and “firearms (loaded/unloaded).”

What was that all about? I could understand it if I were in a psychiatrist’s office or I was suicidal. Could this be a sneaky way for the government to find out who has guns and if they are loaded?

You might want to think twice before answering this type of question.

Connie Gibbs,

Letart, W.Va.

The "government" doesn't have to be "sneaky" to find out who has a gun. The government has access to that information.
