Point wrestling wins JCI

RIPLEY — Point Pleasant had one individual champion and seven runner-up finishers at the JCI Wrestling Tournament over the weekend en route to yet another team victory.

The Black Knights, who have swept the overall championship at all four tournaments held so far this season, claimed another title with a 33.5 point victory over Ripley Friday and Saturday in Ripley.

Point Pleasant racked up 221.5 points over the two day event, 33.5 points better than runner-up Ripley. Independence was third with 167 points followed by Huntington (140) and Roane County (134.5).

Rounding out the top 10 were Herbert Hoover (93), Wirt County (64), Parkersburg South B (63), St. Marys (52.5) and Sissonville (46.5).

Also competing locally were Point Pleasant’s junior varsity team and the Wahama squad. Point’s reserves placed 14th followed by Wahama in 15th.

Individually for the Black Knights, defending state champion Rusty Maness took first in the 119-pound weight class with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Claiming runner-up spots were Caleb Duong (2-1) in the 112-pound weight class, Jared Searls (3-1) in the 130-pound weight class, Josh Hereford (3-1) in the 135-pound weight class, Donovan Powell (2-1) in the 145-pound weight class, Brock McClung (2-1) in the 160-pound weight class, Derek Mitchell (2-1) in the 171-pound weight class and Casey Hogg (3-1) in the 285-pound weight class.

Rounding out the podium finishers were third place award winners Phillip Allen (4-1) in the 125-pound weight class, Matt McCormick (4-1) in the 140-pound weight class and Eric Veith (4-1) in the 189-pound weight class.

Other participants for the Knights included Russell Kidwell (3-2, 152-pounds), Austin McBeath (3-2, 171-pounds), Matt Thompson (3-2, 215-pounds), Matt Cornell (2-2, 103-pounds), Matt Weddington (2-2, 215-pounds), Josh Sayre (1-2, 152-pounds), Jerrod Long (1-2, 215-pounds), Morgan Flora (0-2, 130-pounds), Clinton Carr (0-2, 152-pounds), Josie Smith (0-2, 171-pounds), Jacob Gleason (0-2, 189-pounds) and Ron Lively (0-2, 285-pounds.

Point Pleasant will return to action this weekend at the Big 16 Tournament in Braxton County on Friday and Saturday.
