NEW HAVEN — At the most recent meeting of the Town of New Haven Council, members discussed several aspects concerning the Bend Area Community Center.

Volunteer Bernita Allen informed the council that grant money from the Parkersburg Foundation had been received, in addition to updating the council on the savings and checking accounts for the center. A discussion also took place on the possibilty of turning one of the tennis courts at the center into a basketball court. Mayor George Gibbs was not opposed to the idea, and more will come on this topic as it becomes available.

Also, as previously reported, Allen also discussed the town acquiring the deed to the community center. According to the discussion, over the years the deed has been passed back and forth between different committees and organizations, all of which have since disbanded. The proper paperwork in is the works for the town to acquire the deed to the building, yet it wasn’t known when the deed might be acquired.

Also concerning recreation, a motion was made to rent a water slide for the pool on the Fourth of July, with a first from Council woman Dorothy Roush and a second from Councilman Jim Elias. Motion carried. Also, despite the cancellation of the Fourth of July parade, it was reported the pool still offered free swimming that day.

Also at the meeting, Elias made a motion to raise the price per page for copying at City Hall. The motion was to raise the price to one dollar per page. Roush seconded the motion. With only one opposition, the motion carried.

A discussion concerning water charges for the town entities was also brought up, and Mayor Gibbs asked that it be tabled until he was able to see a printout for each account. Gibbs also presented a revised copy of the budget, which was accepted with a motion from Councilwoman Frances Taylor and a second from Councilman Jeff Russell. Motion carried.

In other council news, Mayor Gibbs acknowledged several workers for their work on Lewis Street. Concerning wastewater, it was reported that the price to replace a pump is being looked into. The cost will be presented to council when it is received. Concerning the police department, permission was given to Chief Hardwick to purchase door safety check slips for the town.

The following building permits were also approved: #670, Natalie Morgan, replacing a driveway; #671, Ron Wood, fencing in front yard; and # 672, Dan Harbour, fencing in yard. A motion was made by Roush with a second from Elias. Taylor abstained due to being on the zoning board. Motion carried.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read and accepted with a first from Councilwoman Sarah Gibbs, and a second from Taylor. The financial report was read and accepted with a first from Elias and second from Taylor. Accounts payable were also approved with a first from Elias and a second from Russell. All three motions carried. Newly elected council members, as well as re-elected incumbents, were also sworn in, which was reported on in a previous edition.

In addition to Mayor George Gibbs, council members attending were Frances Taylor, Sarah Gibbs, Jeff Russell, Jim Elias, Dorothy Roush, and Recorder Roberta Hysell.

The Town of New Haven Council will meet again at 6 p.m. on July 12.
