POINT PLEASANT — Today is a day to remember the many veterans that sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that we as Americans enjoy today.

Mason County is an area with many veterans, and several celebrations already have occurred to honor local veterans.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, a Veterans Day parade was held on Main St. in Point Pleasant. Dennis Rayburn, West Virginia State Commander, served as the Grand Marshall for the parade, which drew a large crowd who came to pay their respects to local veterans.

“Veterans Day is important because it is the one opportunity that veterans have to celebrate and to be celebrated for their service to the country,” Rayburn said.

Area schools paid tribute to local veterans as well. Wahama High School held a Veterans Day assembly and reception on Tuesday, and many area veterans attended the event and were recognized. Students also read speeches about Veterans Day. According to Vice Principal Melissa Vanmeter, the assembly went very well. Pictures from the event will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Point Pleasant Register.

Roosevelt Elementary School also hosted a Veterans Day assembly on Tuesday. Area veterans were in attendance, and students presented a program regarding the importance of veterans. The French Chorders Quartet of Gallipolis, Ohio also performed both patriotic and fun songs during the assembly. Following the event’s conclusion, students presented the veterans in attendance with hand-made cards and drawings.

Today, there will be Veterans Day Flyover of the 130th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Inc., located on W.Va. 62 in Letart. The Flyover will take place at 11:55 a.m., and will feature former Army and Vietnam Veteran, Rev. Charles Hargraves, who will lead the invocation at 11:40 a.m. Bill Davis, a former Air Force veteran, will play TAPS at the conclusion of the Flyover.

According to Steve Halstead, event organizer, all veterans as well as the general public, are encouraged to attend the event and should arrive at 11:30 a.m.
