Mason Co. Board of Education approves agenda, recognizes teachers and students

POINT PLEASANT — According to Thomas Nunnery, Mason County Board of Education President, the past two regular session board agendas have been approved and several staff members and students were recognized. The Mid-Ohio Valley Center also conducted a presentation on dual-credit classes during the Nov. 23 meeting.
Also during the November meeting, the Board approved graduation for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. on May 29, 2010, at the PPJSHS Athletic Complex.
• The Board approved the following drivers for the 2009-2010 year: Scarlett Enos, Martha Reed, Kendra Maness, and Adam Watson.
• The Board approved the following volunteers: Hannan Jr./Sr. High, Donna Duke, Stewart Duke, Todd Fowler and Kayla Perry; New Haven, Melissa Burke, Paula Cunningham, Ricky Kearns, Jessica McDade, Michael Stanhope and Lori Zerkle; Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High, David Westfall and Tammy Westfall; Point Pleasant Intermediate, Wendy Lilly and Elizabeth Roberts; Roosevelt, Carl Baker, Monica Baker, Evadna Bartlett, Fay Fauver, Shirley Harmon, LaDonna Hart, Connie Hussell, Sheila Jones, Ethel Jordan, Paul Lambert, Donna Legg, Misty Newell, Harry Queen, Sheena Reynolds, Malei Sayre, Susan Sayre and Paul Sheets; Wahama Jr./Sr. High, Steve Peters.
• The Board approved the following resignations: Brittany Clagg, Cheerleading Coach, Hannan Jr./Sr. High School, effective immediately; Denver B. Kerr, Teacher, Grade 6, Leon Elementary, effective June 30, 2010, due to retirement; Kay Hatfield, Cook, Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, effective June 30, 2010, due to retirement; Brenda Withers, Teacher, Grade 3, Ashton Elementary, effective June 30, 2010, due to retirement; Edward Coon, .5 Athletic Director, Wahama Jr./Sr. High School, effective at end of 2009-2010 school year; Harold T. Grimes, Math Teacher, Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, effective June 30, 2010 due to retirement; Amy Kammer, Special Education Site Based Manager, Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, effective immediately; and Sylvia Hendrickson, Special Education Site Based Manager, Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, effective immediately.
• The Board approved the employment of the following substitute teachers for the 2009-2010 school year: Dwayne Russell.
• The Board approved the following substitute bus operators for the Transportation Department effective for the 2009-2010 school year: Joseph Barss, Thomas Bird, Vanessa Bowles, Michael Davis, Michael Gillispie, Patrick Hill, Joseph Marcum, Douglas Randolph, Clarence Rice III, Clarence Rice, Jr., and Danny Roush.
• The Board approved a supplement in the amount of $5,000 for the position of Dean of Students for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School effective for the 2009-2010 year. Funding source is County Funds.
• In finance, the Board approved the purchasing of 10 computers, monitors, additional memory, and software from Pomeroy IT Solutions for a total of $10,550. These items are off the WV State contract and Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School general levy account is the funding source.
The Board approved the purchase of two Mountbatten Light Touch Braillers from Humanware for a total of $8,999 to be used with visually impaired students. Reimbursement will be provided from the State Assistive Technology Grant, Office of Special Programs and Extended Learning.
• The Board approved the low bid of $20,557.19 from Airgas, Mid America for the purchase of four Miller XMT 304 MIGRunner packages, one Millermatic 350P/XR-Alum-Pro Push-Pull Gun Aluminum System, and three Bernard Q300 MIG GUNS for the Mason County Career Center and Hannan Jr./Sr. High School. Funding to be provided by the Adult Prep Grant, CTE Equipment Replacement Grant, and Night School Payments.
• The Board also approved a contracted service agreement between Rebecca Wood and the Mason County Board of Education for professional instructional services involving the Reading First Grant 09/10 for the remainder of the school year. Funding provided by Title I-Reading First Funds.
The first meeting of this month was held Tuesday, Dec. 8. A reception was held prior to the meeting at the Mason County Career Center-Hartley Building to recognize Ms. Rhonda Tennant, Ms. Rita Mace, Wes Davis and Evan Wilson.
Tennant is a teacher at New Haven Elementary and was named the recipient of the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award. Mace is a teacher at the Point Pleasant Intermediate School and is the recipient of the WV Reading Teacher of the Year. She also received the State Reading Association Honor.
Both Davis and Wilson will be recognized for winning at the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Agricultural Science Fair.
• The Board scheduled a working session set for Dec. 17, 2009 to include topics of personnel, finance, and curricular areas. It will be held at the Mason County Career Center-Hartley Building.
• The Board approved out-of-state travel for Roosevelt Elementary sixth grade students, Susan Pyles, Lisa Moody, and approved volunteers to travel to Washington, D.C. by chartered bus on May 26-28, 2010. Cost to be paid from Roosevelt Elementary Sixth Grade General Fund.
• The Board approved out-of-state travel for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High wrestling team, JoAnn Cullen, Jed Ott, Ed Withrow, Daniel Tench, John Bonecutter, Kerri Lewis, Tracy McCormick, and approved volunteers to attend “The Outback Steakhouse Classic” Wrestling Match in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Dec. 10-15, 2009. Funding source will be Athletic Boosters and School Excess Levy Co-Curricular Funds.
• The Board approved out-of-state travel for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High JCDC students to Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Ky. to attend the play, “A Christmas Story” on Dec. 16, 2009. Funding source will be County Co-Curricular Funds.
• The Board approved out-of-state travel for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School JCDC students to Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Ky. to attend the play, “The Rhythm of the Drum” on Feb. 4, 2010. Funding source will be County Co-Curricular Funds.
• The Board posted the position of LEP Teacher on an as needed basis, Central Office Itinerant, $20 per hour for the 2009-2010 school year, Title III. ARRA IDEA Funds will be the funding sources.
• The Board deleted the position of high schools Work Site Based Managers for Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, Hannan Jr./Sr. High School, and Wahama Jr./Sr. High School, effective Jan. 20, 2010.
• The Board approved the following drivers for the 2009-2010 school year: Crystal Hendricks, Harley Hendricks, Tracy McCormick, and Yvonne McCormick.
• The Board approved the following volunteers: Beale Elementary, Judy Avis, Diana Blain, Kathy Cobb, Danny Hall, Yvonne Robinson, and Jean Williamson; Hannan Jr./Sr. High School, Terry Camp, Amber Cottrill, Tom Long, Jenny Jenkins, Mark Jenkins, Valerie Long, Angela Perry, Johnny Pirston, Wayne Richardson, Kem Shaw, and Charles Tolliver, Jr.
• The Board approved the following resignations: Timothy Howard, Coach Assistant, Junior Varsity Softball, Wahama Jr./Sr. High School, effective Nov. 19, 2009; and Adam Snider, Assistant Coach, Volleyball, Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School, effective immediately.
• The Board approved of the following transfers: Maria K. Miller, Teacher, Preschool Special Needs, Leon Elementary 2010/2011 school year to Teacher, Preschool Special Needs, Ashton Elementary, effective for the 2010/2011 school year; Thomas J. Reynolds, Bus Operator Route 2062, Transportation Department to Bus Operator Route 2015, Transportation Department, effective Dec. 10, 2009; George Shell, Bus Operator Route 2092, Transportation Department to Bus Operator Route 2031, Transportation Department, effective Dec. 10, 2009; and Rodney Gleason, Bus Operator Route 973, Transportation Department to Bus Operator Route 993, Transportation Department, effective Dec. 10, 2009.
