Dear Editor,

I cannot remember the source of my information but believe it was a Public Television documentary, “The Fallen Bridge,” which we have always referred to as the Silver Bridge, was actually named the Hoover Bridge, but took the Silver Bridge name due to its color. Now we have a New Silver Bridge, or is it the New Hoover Bridge?

I crossed the old bridge about 10 minutes before the collapse. My dad, Byron Dudding, a postal employee, was working in the Point Pleasant Post Office when the old bridge fell. Hearing the noise, he rushed to the top floor to look out. He then called the U.S. Coast Guard, who were, as yet, unaware of the disaster.

Sad disabled veteran

I recently read your article about the pinning ceremony for the nursing students of the University of Rio Grande and the different award winners and the speaker talking as if writing in his diary was great acknowledgement. The part that bothered me and several other people oh wait let me rephrase myself as a disabled veteran and my fellow veterans is when he felt it necessary to refer to the psychiatric clinical at the VA as a prison. Those men and women are not criminals or are they in a prison they are the people who are having a hard time because of something that happened to them while they were serving their country making it possible for people like him to make speaches like dear diary. They should not be mocked like they are there for someone's comical reference to make their speach funny. I find it sad that this person is going to be a nurse and has the gall to say that he is part of a profession of fixer I have no doubt that many in that graduating class will be great nurses but it only takes one to cast a shadow over all those in that graduating class. I just find it sad that the gentleman speaking and those of the institution thought that part of his speach was appropriate.
