During Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Bruce Riffle reported that the planning stages for the sewer project were moving forward. He said Fred Hypes of Dunn Engineering and Kathy Elliot of Region II were unable to attend the meeting but have continued to update and work with him on the project’s status.
The sewer project will convert private sewer systems in town to a public system. Private systems, such as septic tanks, will be replaced to be both more modern and environmentally friendly.
According to Riffle, a lot of the private systems are old and need to be replaced.
“(The sewer project) will definitely improve our property values and make (the town) a more attractive place for people that want to move and build here,” Riffle said. “It will make a more modern community.”
According to Riffle, the project will be filed with the Public Service Commission in the upcoming weeks, which is the project’s next big step. In addition, Riffle reported that both the properly acquisitions and rights-of-way were almost complete.
Riffle said he believed that the project’s status was on track and that the administration hopes to have construction start this summer.
“We are much closer than we have been,” he added.
In other business:
• Riffle reported that AEP has scheduled new street lights to be installed in town this week.
• Riffle reported that he is meeting with representatives of the West Virginia Division of Highways to discuss getting new street and corporation signs.
• Council members are preparing for the town’s municipal election in June.
The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.
