POINT PLEASANT — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Although the turkey has yet to be served, Mason County is already set for the Holiday season.
On Friday the City of Point Pleasant’s Holiday Parade will take place at 6 p.m. on Main Street. Parade line-up is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Mason County Board of Education Office.
The Holiday parade will feature floats by clubs, 4-H groups, various festival royalty and, of course, St. Nick himself. Although signing up for the parade is not mandatory, it is appreciated. Following the parade’s conclusion, Krodel Park’s Christmas Fantasy Light Show will officially kick off. Light displays, including a Santa Claus, sternwheeler boat, 20-foot windmill and gingerbread man will be featured lining the park. In addition, the legendary Mothman himself is featured complete with the glowing, infamous red eyes. Several new light displays have been added this year as well.
The light show will be in operation from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. nightly starting Friday through Dec. 31. There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted and appreciated. On Saturday, Dec. 5, Krodel Park’s Fort Randolph will celebrate the holidays 17th century style with the annual Christmas on the Frontier event. The event is slated to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public. For more information, contact Craig Hesson, president of the Fort Randolph Committee, at 304-675-7933.
Also slated for Dec. 5, will be the Town of New Haven’s Christmas parade. For more information on the parade, call the city building at 304-882-3203 or e-mail janet.newhaven@gmail.com. The Town of Mason’s Christmas parade is slated for Dec. 5 as well and will begin at 2 p.m. with line-ups to take place at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church. The parade route will continue to the fire station on Anderson St. Following the parade, Santa Claus will be at the Mason Town Hall to give out treats to children ages 12 and under. Those who wish to take part in the parade must call the city building at 304-773-5200.
The Christmas Fantasy Light Show is not the only holiday display in town. The West Virginia State Farm Museum’s Holiday Light Festival will be 6-9 p.m. nightly Dec. 11-21. Santa Claus will be on hand during the festival, and free hot chocolate and cookies for children will be provided each evening. There is no admission fee for the show. Capping out the county’s holiday season will be the Henderson Christmas parade, which is slated for 5 p.m. with line-ups at 4:30 p.m. After the parade, Toys and Treats with Santa Claus will begin at 6 p.m. at the Henderson Community Building. Toys and Treats is a program designed to make the holiday a special time for local children. Funds are raised each year by various town events in order to be able to provide each child with a treat and gift from Santa. On Dec. 20, Henderson also will host their annual free Christmas dinner for local residents.
