Around 30 kids from across Mason, Meigs and Gallia counties took part in a youth wrestling camp hosted by the PPHS Wrestling Boosters this week. PPHS Wrestling coaches, alumni and current wrestlers provided the instruction.

POINT PLEASANT — Sometimes the key to life is all in knowing how to get a grip on it.

Just ask 30 young boys who attended this week’s Youth Wresting Camp held by the Point Pleasant High School Wrestling Boosters.

For most of this week, these young boys put aside part of their summer to learn the fundamentals of wrestling and to be taught by PPHS Wrestling Coaches as well as alumni and current wrestlers.

PPHS Wrestling Coach John Bonecutter said the camp, which has become a summer tradition, benefits the community in many ways, including giving youth something positive to do in the summer. Bonecutter said those signed up for the camp benefit from staying active and keeping their skills sharp during the off season. He also added, it’s an outlet for his current wrestlers and alumni who have returned.

“Probably 70 percent of the teaching is done by my high school kids, and the alumni,” Bonecutter explained. “These high school kids and alumni are giving up their time on break to come in to camp and give back.”

This year the wrestlers at the camp ranged in age from three years old to 10 years old. They also came from not only the Point Pleasant area but from Gallia and Meigs counties in Ohio.

The PPHS Wrestling Boosters stay active in the community and not only offered the camp but are working on a new home for the PPHS Wrestling Team which will also be made available to the youth - the same youth who will be the future of PPHS’ tradition of wrestling champions.
