Battle Days Art Show: Winfield woman wins pro division; New Haven man, Meigs Co. top amateurs

POINT PLEASANT — The 16th Annual Battle Days Art Show was held during recent festival at the Gallery at 409 on Main Street.

A total of 31 artists — 11 professional and 20 amateur — entered the contest and guests from seven states and many local attendees were given People’s Choice Award ballots to cast their votes in the show’s two divisions.

In the Professional Division, Janet Ripper Chambers of Winfield was voted the winner with “Carolina Wren,” a watercolor painting.

The Amateur Division competition finished in a tie. Mike Cogar of New Haven, and Diana L. Johnson of Long Bottom, Ohio, were announced as the People’s Choice Award winners in this division. Cogar’s graphite work was entitled, “Enough Bloodshed.” Johnson won for her “Early Morning Geese” acrylic painting.

Another prestigious award went to Randall Lucas of Gallipolis, Ohio, for his wood carving entitled, “Indigo Bunting.”

Professional Division

• Oil and Acrylic: First place, Debbie Kalt Sisson of Ripley, “South Carolina Porch,” acrylic painting; second place, H. Kevin Price of Gallipolis Ferry, “Red Head” acrylic work; and third place, Carolyn Brown of Ravenswood, “Reflect On This,” oil painting. Brown also received Honorable Mention for her oil painting, “Carolina In The Morning.”

• Watercolor: First place, Debbie Kalt Sisson of Ripley, “WWII Buddies,” watercolor; second place, Janet Ripper Chambers of Winfield, “Red Bat,” watercolor; and third place, Maxine Kinnaird of Gallipolis Ferry, “Lest We Forget,” watercolor. Chambers also received Honorable Mention for her watercolor (gouache), “Carolina Wren.”

• Other media: First place, Debbie Kalt Sisson of Ripley, “Wood County Courthouse,” drawing; second place, Stacy Blazer of Bidwell, Ohio, “Time,” drawing; and third place also went to Blazer for a tempra work entitled, “Music.”

• Drawing works: First place, Marcus Click of Cottageville, “Freedom,” pencil drawing; and second place, Stacy Blazer of Bidwell, Ohio, “The Lil Schemers,” a pencil drawing of her daughters. Click also receiveed Honorable Mention for another one of his pencil drawings entitled, “Wild and Wonderful.”

Amateur Division

• Oil and Acrylic: First place, Julia Proctor of Middleport, Ohio, “Sugar Run Mills,” oil painting; second place, Emalea Neal of Apple Grove, “Floating,” acrylic painting; and third place, Wanda Jordan, “Shiloh” (a friendly-looking dog), acrylic painting. Jordan also received Honorable Mention for her oil painting entitled, “Early Morning Geese.”

• Watercolor: First place, Robert Tripp of Tuppers Plains, Ohio, “Birds & Dogs,” watercolor.

• Other media: First place, Joseph E. Cullen II of Leon, “Drive Thru”; second place, Elizabeth Hamilton of Gallipolis, Ohio, “Blue Eyes,” marker work; and third place also went to Hamilton for her colored pencil work entitled, “Indian Girl.” Cullen also received Honorable Mention for his pastel entitled, “Along Dirt Road.”

• Drawing works: First place, Mike Cogar of New Haven, “Rascal,” second place, Emalea Neal of Apple Grove, “Self Portrait;” and third place, Sue Tipton of Gallipolis, Ohio, “Anatomy of a Paddlewheel.” Neal also received Honorable Mention for her drawing entitled “Friends.”

• Carving: First place, Jim Dabney of Point Pleasant, “Sunset,” Intarsia; second place, Derek Weber of Pomeroy, Ohio, “You Know What They Say About Big Paintbrushes,” broom; and third place also went to Dabney for “Busy Barnyard,” Intarsia. John G. Chilmoink of Gallipolis, Ohio, received Honorable Mention for “A Perfectly Matched Set, Both Left And Right,” a highfire ceramic work.

All art pieces were done by artists 18-years of age or older. The show was judged by a professional artist.
