POINT PLEASANT — Being an alert and aware driver can make the road a safer place for all vehicles.

To help others learn the importance of being a safe driver, there will be an AARP Driver Safety Class on Monday, Nov. 16 and Friday, Nov. 20. The classes will take place at Pleasant Valley Hospital in the Buxton Conference Room.

Both classes will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will last four hours. The classes are geared toward people age 50 and older, and are designed to help refresh memories regarding the rules of the road as well as to give insight into what to look for as people age.

According to Koneda Devrick, class instructor, the safety course’s goal is to make the roads safer for everyone by making people more alert to the actions of others as well to show drivers those things to which they need to pay attention.

“(The class) helps make people more aware of how their own age can slow them down on reaction time. It helps them to be aware of what other people are doing and not doing,” she said.

Devrick, who has taught the driving course several times, described it as being very beneficial.

“This class is on Monday and Friday, and usually on Friday it is most likely that people come into the class saying that they saw people doing things that are not safe. This class makes them be aware of other drivers and how they can be more safe around other drivers,” she said. “A lot of times you can prevent an accident by being more alert of what other drivers are doing.”

Devrick praised PVH for allowing the class to take place in their facility.

“PVH has provided quite a service to the community for allowing us to use their location,” she said.

According to Devrick, this will be the last AARP Driver Safety Class offered in 2009. To register, call Devrick at (304) 675-6743 or (304) 675-4340, ext. 1100. AARP members that attend are asked to bring their AARP membership card to the first class.
