ROCKSPRINGS — Coal Grove exploded for 34 second half points to erase a 13-12 halftime deficit and the Hornets went on to defeat Meigs 46-13 in the season opener for both teams. The loss could have been even more costly for the Maroon and Gold as they lost the services of outstanding sophomore quarterback Cody Bartrum with apparent internal injuries in the first half. Cody was taken from the field at the start of the third period by Meigs County EMS and was having test run on him at O’Bleness Hospital in Athens. Then late in the game the Marauders lost their senior tackle Daylen Neece with a possible concussion, and he was also transported to a local hospital by Meigs EMS.

Meigs forced a Hornet punt after the opening kickoff and drove straight down the field to take the early lead. Michael Davis scored from 24 yards out, capping an eight play 47 yard drive. Ty Phelps added the extra points for a 7-0 Marauder lead. Coal Grove came right back however and Tanner Murphy rumbled in from 10 yards out, the extra point was no good but the visitors had pulled to with in 7-6.

Bartrum scored to put Meigs ahead 13-6 when he kept it from eight yards out. The kick was no good but Meigs was on top 13-6 with 4 seconds left in the half. Coal Grove hit paydirt less then three minutes later when Isaiah Gunther scored from 43 yards out. The pass was no good but Coal Grove had pulled to within 13-12 which is the way the half ended.

The Hornets took their first lead of the night when Gunther scored from seven yards out with 6:46 left in the third period. Daniel Rutherford added the PAT and a 20-13 Coal Grove lead. Jesse Rigsby scored from 54 yards out with 3:09 left in the third for a 26-13 Hornet lead.

Coal Grove put the game out of reach in the fourth period on runs of 35 and 11 by Gunther, and added a late touchdown Tanner Henry scored from 15 yards out. Three Marauder turnovers in the fourth period set up all three scores.

Gunther had an outstanding night picking up 205 yards on 20 carries, Tanner Murphy added 47 in seven tries. Rigsby was two of five in the air for 32 yards and an interception. Gunther caught one for 25 yards.

Davis led Meigs with 21 carries for 106 yards, Isiah English added 21 in five tries. Bartrum was 7-of-12 in for 94 yards the air before being injured. English was 1-of-5 for seven yards. Phelps caught five passes for 61 yards.
