NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Bad starts led to a bad finish.

The River Valley boys basketball team was outscored 29-15 in the opening quarters of each half, allowing host Nelsonville-York to claim a 58-41 victory Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup in Athens County.

The visiting Raiders (5-17) were doubled up from the start, as the Buckeyes (12-8) stormed out to a 14-7 advantage after eight minutes and never looked back. NYHS followed with an 18-11 second quarter run, allowing the Orange and Brown to secure a 32-18 edge at the intermission.

The hosts kept that momentum going in the third canto, as the Buckeyes made a 15-8 charge to increase their cushion out to a comfortable 47-26 lead. RVHS closed regulation with a 15-11 run to wrap up the 17-point outcome.

Bailey Rhodes led the Raiders with nine points, followed by Seann Roberts with eight points and Andrew Moffett with seven markers. Brody Moles and Mark Wray were next with four points apiece, while Tyler Twyman chipped in three markers.

Trey Craycraft, John Qualls and Justin Rusk rounded out the RVHS tally with two points each. The guests were 10-of-18 at the free throw line for 56 percent.

Josh Fayette paced NYHS with a game-high 11 points, all of which came in the first half. Cannon Kilbarger was next with nine points, followed by Jeremy Warren and Colt Adams with eight markers each. The Buckeyes were 6-of-9 at the charity stripe for 67 percent.

River Valley will play its OVC finale tonight when it travels to Pedro for a 6 p.m. tipoff at Rock Hill.
