POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A solid effort from start to finish leads the Lady Raiders to victory.
The River Valley girls basketball earned a convincing Saturday afternoon, defeating host Point Pleasant 72-23 in a non-conference tilt in Mason County.
The Lady Raiders (8-10) surged out to an 18-4 lead through the first eight minutes of play and expanded the lead to 31-12 at halftime. RVHS outscored Point Pleasant (0-19) 25-to-4 in the third quarter and 16-to-7 in the fourth to seal the 72-23 victory.
Rachael Smith led the Lady Raiders with 21 points, followed by Chelsea Copley with 13 and Courtney Smith with 11. Shelby Brown had nine points, Leia Moore added six, while Tiana Qualls chipped in with five. Bailey Adkins finished with four points and Lindsey Canaday finished with two, rounding out the RVHS total.
The Silver and Black shot 19-of-25 (76 percent) from the free throw line in the triumph.
The Lady Knights were paced by Charli Leach with 12 points and Michaela Cottrill with six. Cassie Nibert marked three points, while Marlee Bruner and Aislyn Hayman each had one in the setback. PPHS was 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
River Valley has now won back-to-back games and improves to 5-5 in non Ohio Valley Conference games this season.
