STEWART, Ohio — A good start helps, but sometimes it’s how you finish that makes all the difference.

The South Gallia boys basketball held a seven point advantage at halftime over Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Federal Hocking. The Lancers, however, outscored SGHS by 23 points in the second half to take the 50-34 victory in Athens County.

The Rebels (6-8, 5-5 TVC Hocking) held a 6-5 advantage after a slow paced first quarter and opened the lead to 24-17 at halftime.

The Lancers (9-7, 6-5) came out of the intermission with a 16-0 run, erasing the deficit and building a nine point lead of their own. South Gallia rallied to pull within six by the end of the third period but the Rebels were outscored 14-t0-4 over the final eight minutes and Federal Hocking took the 50-34 triumph.

South Gallia was led by Landon Hutchinson with 12 points, followed by Gus Slone and Brayden Greer with nine each. Ethan Spurlock and Mikey Wheeler each added two points, capping off the SGHS total.

The Lancers were led by Pete Crum with 19 followed by Ivan Santiago with 12. A.J. Cobb and Peyton Seel each had five points, Alfy Nichols marked four, Taylor Gates added three and Jonathon Snyder finished with two for the Maroon and Gold.

The season series between the Rebels and Lancers is split, as South Gallia won the first meeting of the year on December 13, in Mercerville.
