GLOUSTER, Ohio — Small victories can be found, even in a loss.

The Eastern football team knew it were facing a daunting task Friday night when the Eagles took the field against Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division leader Trimble. The only points the Tomcat defense had given up this season were the seven defending WVSSAC Class-A state champion Wahama scored in week 2, but the Eagles found the endzone twice Friday night in a 60-12 defeat in Athens County.

The unbeaten Tomcats (7-0, 5-0 TVC Hocking) scored twice in the opening six minutes of the game, a 14 yard Konner Standley pass to Austin Downs and a 14 yard Justice Jenkins run, with Jon Stevens making one extra point and THS led 13-0.

The Eagles (2-5, 2-4) found reason to celebrate with 57 seconds remaining in the first period with Tyler Barber found the endzone from three yards away, and in the process becoming the second player to score against Trimble this season.

Leading 13-6 at the end of the first quarter Trimble found the endzone four times over the next 12 minutes. First a 19 yard run by quarterback Konner Standley, then a 79 yard pass from Standley to Downs, followed by a six yard run by Jacob Koons and finally on a 17 yard pass from Standley to Jenkins as time expired. Jon Stevens hit all four extra points and Trimble held the 41-6 halftime advantage.

The third period was more of the same for THS, as Terry Simerly caught a 40 yard TD pass from Standley and Koons ran into the endzone from one yard out. Stevens added one point after and Trimble led 54-6 with 12 minutes remaining.

Bryce Smathers found the endzone for Trimble within two minutes of the start of the final canto and Trimble led 60-6.

At the 7:04 mark of the fourth Eastern senior Zach Browning scored from three yards out and became the third player to find the endzone against Trimble this season. As time expired the Eagles found they had lost 60-12 but at the same time became the first team other than the Tomcats to score in Glouster.

Junior quarterback Dylan Bresciani led the Green and White with 62 yards on 17 carries to go along with 52 yards on 6-of-14 passing with a pair of interceptions.

Barber ran the ball three times for 12 yards and a score, while Browning had 12 yards and a TD on four attempts. Chase Cook finished with nine yards on three carries, while Zack Scowden marked two yards on four rushes.

Barber also led the EHS receiving core with one catch for 32 yards, followed by Daschle Facemyer hauled in two passes for 11 yards. Christian Speelman caught two passes for five yards and Cameron Richmond caught one pass for four yards in the setback.

The Tomcats were led by Standley, who had 75 yards and a touchdown on 10 rushes and was 10-of-13 passing for 192 yards and four scores.

Jenkins rushed for 40 yards and a score on six carries, Kamron Curry had 35 yards on six carries, Bryce Smathers ran for 33 yards on five attempts with a score, and Jacob Koons ran for 27 yards and two scores on five tries.

The Tomcat receiving leaders were Downs with 95 yards and two scores on four grabs, Simerly with 41 yards on two catches with a score and Jenkins with 33 yards and a touchdown on three catches.

As a team Trimble ran for 233 yards on 40 carries and threw 200 yards on 11-of-14 passing. Eastern had 97 rushing yards on 31 tries to go with 52 yards in the air on 6-of-14 passing.

THS held a 18-to-8 first down advantage, a 54-to-45 advantage in plays ran and a 423-to-149 advantage in total yards. EHS was penalized eight times for 87 yards, while Trimble was setback 50 yards on six penalties. Each team fumbled once and the Eagles recovered both. Eastern was forced to punt seven times, while Trimble didn’t punt in the game. Trimble has now defeated Eastern 14 times in a row.

The Green and White return to East Shade River Stadium next week when they host the 5-2 Doddridge County Bulldogs in a non-conference bout. Trimble will visit 3-4 Belpre next Friday in a TVC Hocking contest.
