Filho big again for RedStorm in win over UPike

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Apparently, Luiz Filho is not one to rest on his laurels.
Less than 24 hours after earning NAIA National Player of the Week honors for a pair of hat tricks in two victories last week, the native of Sao Paulo, Brazil added three more goals and a pair of assists in the University of Rio Grande’s 7-0 win over the University of Pikeville, Wednesday night, in Mid-South Conference men’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm, ranked No. 2 in the latest NAIA coaches’ poll, improved to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play with its third consecutive shutout triumph.
Rio Grande also got a pair of goals from freshman forward Pau Rodriguez (Barcelona, Spain), a goal and two assists from senior forward Orlando Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) and two assists from senior defender Nikoy Wallace (Montego Bay, Jamaica) in the victory.
However, Rio head coach Scott Morrissey was anything but giddy about his club’s overall performance after all was said and done.
“To be honest, I don’t think the scoreline reflects the kind of game it was,” he said. “Pikeville deserves a great deal of credit for coming out tonight and really getting after it. The score definitely doesn’t reflect how hard they worked to get something positive out of the match tonight and how poorly we played. Regardless of the final score, we didn’t execute very well and I was disappointed in both our effort and our overall team concept tonight. Hopefully, we’ll learn that you just cant go about your business and play the way we did and expect to be successful.”
Filho, a sophomore forward, assisted on both of the goals by Rodriguez - at the 4:10 and 42:11 mark of the first half - before scoring himself off of a pass from Zapata with 1:48 left before halftime to give the RedStorm a 3-0 halftime lead.
Zapata also assisted on Filho’s second marker at 58:44 before scoring his goal off an assist by Wallace just under 11 minutes later to make it 5-0.
Senior midfielder Maxi Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay) found the net off of a free kick with 17:15 remaining to push the cushion to 6-0 before Filho finished off the scoring with 9:18 left in the contest thanks to an assist by Wallace.
Filho now has nine goals and the two assists in his last three games, running his season totals to 12 goals, three assists and 27 points.
Rio Grande enjoyed a 29-12 edge in shots, including 14-5 on goal.
Junior goalie Jon Dodson (Tiffin, OH) had five saves in a complete game effort for the RedStorm, while Diego Rivas and Alfredo Piedra divided time in net for the Bears (3-6, 1-3). Rivas stopped two shots and Piedra was credited with four saves.
The contest also included a combined 27 common fouls - 18 of which were whistled on Rio - five yellow card cautions (four on Pikeville) and a red card ejection of Pikeville head coach Adam Johnson with 13:42 remaining in the first half.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday night at Campbellsville University. Homecoming football activities, as well as the women’s soccer game between the two schools, has kickoff not scheduled until 9:30 p.m. EDT.
