POINT PLEASANT —Harmon Park will reopen for the summer on Saturday.

Mayor Brian Billings reported to Point Pleasant City Council this week that the pool had been repainted and was filling for its reopening at noon on Saturday.

Last month council discussed the possibility of the pool closing next year due to maintenance and revenue issues - namely major water leaks and the fact the pool, like many municipal pools, are notorious money pits. Harmon Pool, has also had declining attendance and ended up costing the city $8,000 to operate last year.

Councilwoman Elaine Hunt brought up concerns about the pool’s aerator tank not being poured deep enough when the pool was constructed in the 1980’s. She said she’d discussed this with others who suggested this could be what was causing the water leak and perhaps fixing this would at least alleviate one problem. Hunt said she wanted to keep the pool open in the future.

Billings agreed no one wanted to see the pool close. He added he and city council members had discussed wanting to either keep Harmon Pool or have a smaller pool but definitely wanted to maintain recreational activities available to residents. As previously reported, council will take this year to look into options of either keeping Harmon Pool open, having a smaller pool in a different location (Harmon Pool is in a floodplain) or developing a spray park facility which would be cheaper to maintain.

Prices for the pool this year have not changed from 2013. They are as follows: children under five, $1; students five to 17, $3; adults, $4. Season passes - family up to four, $160, each additional family member $15; individual student, $75, individual adult, $85. Pool parties - one to 50 people, $150, 51-100 people, $200, pool parties are 7-9 p.m. weekdays and 5-7 Saturdays and Sundays.

The pool will be open noon to 5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The pool closes for the season on Aug. 3.
