POINT PLEASANT — Though the 2012 derecho is memorable for many reasons, one is the organization of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Soon after the derecho, the need for community volunteers to assist during disasters became apparent - from needing them to run emergency shelters to help spread the word about where to find assistance.

Tony Jones was elected to organize a local CERT team and received training from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The team is now around 30 members strong and this weekend, training was held for those new and existing members. The Mason County Local Emergency Planning Committee also recently chipped in to provide a small donation to feed those undergoing the training.

The CERT team has also received just under $10,000 in grants. The word is also spreading about the team to allow those local businesses who look to donate to local causes to keep CERT in mind as it affects people at the local level. CERT members will be available to be called out in a moment’s notice by the Mason County Office of Emergency Management when needed.
