Shane C. Breckel and Jay Peterson were appointed Clinton County Board of Elections director and deputy director, respectively, at the courthouse Thursday.

Both were approved in 4-0 votes by the four members of the local board of elections.

Breckel has worked at the board of elections office as an elections specialist since May 2006. Since then, he has assisted in the administration and management of 18 election cycles.

This fall will mark his third gubernatorial election, he noted Thursday.

He succeeds Betsy Hart, who served as the director from February 2006 until her resignation, effective Aug. 15, 2014.

“I look forward to working with Jay. I believe our past experience complements each other well, and I look forward to serving the voters of Clinton County,” said Breckel.

Peterson has assisted in past elections as a polling location manager, voting location manager and elections assistant. He also served as fiscal clerk for the office in 2012.

Most recently, Peterson was a staff accountant with the Clinton County Auditor’s Office.

The deputy director position had not been appointed by the board of elections since 2009.

“With the growing complexity of state elections, the position was reinstated to assist the director with the day-to-day operations of the office,” stated Breckel.

Peterson said, “I think we’ve got a great staff. I see an interesting and bright future for the board and the voters.”

Steve Fricke, who is chairperson of the Clinton County Board of Elections, said Thursday, “The board is very excited for Shane Breckel to be named director and Jay Peterson as deputy director, and I believe they will serve the voters of Clinton County with excellence.”

Business hours at the board of elections office are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, located on the first floor of the county courthouse. The phone number is 937-382-3537.
