GRAYSON, Ky. — The Grayson Gallery & Art Center will be presenting “The ART of Larry May” for the monthly Final Fridays Art Walk with an opening reception on Aug. 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free to the public and will feature live music by Larry Whitt and refreshments by Friends of the Gallery.

According to Grayson Gallery Coordinator, Dan Click, the gallery will also be open on Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature 60 pieces of artist Lay May’s fine art and assemblage works on exhibit.

“Larry May has such an imaginative use of painting along with his ability to combine simple objects and memories into an art piece. His work opens your eyes to a different way to look at everyday things by bringing them together so beautifully!,” Click said.

May was introduced to the local art scene via an invitation to show work at the Grayson Gallery in January, 2014, along with fellow artists/members of the Facebook group, “Kentucky Art Tribe” which was formed after the state’s 2013 SOAR Summit in Pikeville.

May describes art as a journey that is constantly evolving.

“Art is journey, it is always in the state of becoming something else, always moving to a different place. Art is forever changing and becoming something new and different. An artist brings about this change through the creative process. My current work comes from life experiences which also keep changing. I make art from found objects and paint and whatever I might have at hand. Growing up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, we learned to make do with what we had,” May said.

May is a Kentucky artist, born in Floyd County in 1946. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehead State University and earned his Master of Arts at Eastern Kentucky University, and has exhibited for more that 25 years in a multitude of solo and group exhibits. He has been an art instructor for more than 30 years, teaching people of all ages - from senior citizens in a nursing home to kindergarten - as well as students at all levels of education, including college and high school.

He’s also held various painting workshops and taught individual lessons. May has worked in several Public Art projects, including being an “Artist In Residence” through the Kentucky Arts Council, various mural projects, and also served as a board member of the KY Arts Council. Larry May and his wife, Belinda, owned and operated the “Back Porch Gallery” in Benham, Ky., at one time.
