Students at Shawnee State University (SSU) participated in the 2014 SSU Gives Back event Saturday afternoon. The annual event emphasizes becoming actively involved in community service throughout the local area.
Justin McMillan, Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs at SSU and Student Life said, SSU Gives Back is a great opportunity for participating students.
“Today (Saturday) is SSU Gives Back to the community here in Portsmouth and also giving back to the campus by doing community service work. We have different activities for the students, such as highway cleanups, we have a blood drive, we also have park pick ups, and trash pick ups going on throughout the community,” McMillan said.
McMillan said community service is vital for all college students.
“It is extremely important for students. We had a long talk yesterday (Friday) about the purpose of giving back, as being the reason that someone smiles, and brings happiness to the community, knowing that someone actually cares. Now that they are new students here at Shawnee State University, it introduces them to their new community here in Portsmouth, Ohio,” McMillan said.
Brett Carwile, a senior at SSU said, SSU’s Day of Giving entails reaching out to the city of Portsmouth and surrounding areas.
“We welcome leaders, participating freshman and we are doing community service throughout Portsmouth and surrounding communities. We are going to help the freshman to get oriented to the campus and surrounding community so they are able to help with community service, and get involved in other ways,” Carwile said.
Carwile said he believes community service is important.
“Service is very important for students to be mindful of because it’s not just giving back to the community, you are also giving back to yourself, when you realize how much other people do for you, and how unfortunate other people are. It is very easy to take things for granted as to what we do have. There are a lot of places in Portsmouth and surrounding areas that need a lot of help,” he said.
Jordan Quinn, a freshman at SSU, said he is glad to be a part of SSU’s Day of Giving event.
“Today (Saturday) is the day here at Shawnee where we go out to do community service. We are going to down to the river and pick up trash in that area, and make sure that the water is clean. I think that it is a blessing to be able to participate in something like this. You’re helping to make the community clean, and I think that’s a good thing,” Quinn said.
