Two Wilmington men who allegedly robbed a Washington C.H. couple at gunpoint late Wednesday night were arrested early Thursday by police.
Foster L. Raypole, 31, and Johnny Kray Williams, 25, are both being held in the Fayette County Jail on charges of first-degree felony aggravated robbery.
Just before midnight Wednesday, Raypole and Williams reportedly came to Jerry Penwell’s home at 1025 Dayton Ave. Apt. 2 and knocked on the door. Penwell allowed the two men inside his home because he knew Raypole, but did not know Williams, according to police.
There was a brief conversation just before Raypole and Williams allegedly pulled out guns and pointed them in the faces of Penwell and his girlfriend. The two defendants then demanded money from Penwell, police said.
Raypole allegedly tried to strike Penwell in the face with his gun. Williams picked up a glass decoration from a table, broke it on the floor, and then took a piece of broken glass and threatened to cut the woman’s face if she did not give them money, according to police.
Penwell told police that during the altercation, one of the two defendants pulled the trigger on a gun, revealing to Penwell that the gun “was not a real gun,” reports said. Penwell then grabbed Williams and pinned him against the wall.
Williams reportedly dropped his gun while Raypole fled from the home. Williams was able to free himself, according to police, and the two defendants got away with $300 in cash.
Washington C.H. Police were called and told that the suspects were fleeing in a white Dodge truck. An officer saw a truck that matched the description on Dayton Avenue and followed it to Jamison Road. The officer and a Fayette County Sheriff’s deputy stopped the truck on U.S. Route 22 near Jamison Road, according to reports.
The driver was identified as Raypole and the passenger as Williams. Both were removed from the truck and arrested.
It was discovered that the guns Williams and Raypole allegedly used were replica black Beretta pistol BB guns with black electrical tape around the orange ends.
