ASHLAND, Ky. — Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes is scheduled as keynote speaker for the Toyota Young Women Lead Conference to be held Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Ashland Community and Technical College from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.


The Young Women LEAD conference is an education and leadership development conference for high school girls in Eastern Kentucky. It is presented by Toyota and in partnership with SOAR, ACTC and area businesses and organizations.


Dawes is a retired United States gymnast who was a 10-year member of the U.S. national gymnastics team. She was a three-time Olympian and was a member of the 1996 Summer Olympics “Magnificent Seven” team from the United States that won the gold medal.


Dawes is also notable as being the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics, and the first black person of any nationality or gender to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics.


The Mistress of Ceremonies is singer and radio host Julie Reeves.


The agenda for each day of the conference:


9 am. to 9:10 a.m. — Welcome and introductions


11:15 a.m. — Breakout sessions led by area woman professionals and leaders


Noon — Keynote speaker Dominique Dawes, 1996 Olympic gold medal gymnast


The conference will be attended by up to 500 high school girls from the FIVCO area. Conference sessions will include the topics of leadership, education and development.
