Carrying on the tradition

LETART — The annual Letart Soup and Ice Cream Social is set for this weekend, but one of the organizers said the event is much more than the food.

The social starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Letart Community Center on Sandhill Road, according to Shayla Blackshire, one of the organizers. Preparations for the event began Thursday evening, however, when townspeople joined to make the ice cream.

Thursday, residents of the unincorporated Letart area met to cut up meat for the beef vegetable soup that will be cooked over an open fire on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. Blackshire said the social is much more than selling soup and ice cream though.

“It’s so important to our community to keep this annual ice cream social going,” she said. “Not many small towns have this experience any longer. It’s important to our heritage.”

Blackshire added it is a time for family, friends and the community to join together and reminisce about the past with the younger generation. It is also a time of sharing plans for the future of the area, as well.
