POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant River Museum and Learning Center is getting ready for the upcoming River Sweep event, set for Saturday, June 17.

Volunteers should plan to meet at the Point Pleasant River Front where they will be dispersed along the banks of the Ohio River. Lunch will be provided for those who come and get involved.

The Ohio River Sweep has taken place in Gallia, Mason, and Meigs counties for several years now. According to the official website for the organization, it involves six states, over 180 cleanup sites, 3,000 miles of shoreline cleaned, and over 500 tons of debris and trash removed in 2016 alone. According to Jack Fowler, coordinator for this year’s event and director of the museum, nearly two tons of trash is expected to be removed this year.

“It is always a fun day to go out and support the community,” said Fowler. “We hope to see as many people come out and care for our area as possible.”

Amherst Madison will provide a tow boat, barge and skiffs for the collection of trash. Volunteers will be shipped out to various cleanup points along the banks, and skiffs will pick up the collected bags of garbage.

All volunteers will be provided with gloves, garbage bags, a t-shirt, and pizza. Those who wish to help out, are encouraged to contact the river museum to sign up in advance, although that is not necessary. Anyone under 18 will have to have a signed waiver of liability, which is available online at ohioriversweep.org or by contacting the museum.
