GALLIPOLIS FERRY— Empire Cheer Academy is having success with new athlete, Ali Allen, who competes in the Allstar Special Needs exhibition league.
At six years old, Allen is competing in the league and is racking up awards. This season has included two first place wins at the GMCE tournament and the Dayton Exhibition. In this particular league, Allen competes in the cheering competition, with the help of her “big sisters.” They are allowed on the competition floor to assist Allen.
Coach Stacey Adams leads three separate teams at Empire Cheer; Mini Prep, Junior Two, and the Special Needs team. This is the first year for the special needs team, and they are already reaping the benefits.
“We started this program to give athletes with special needs (an opportunity) to perform and excel in the sport,” Adams said.
Adams then explained that this league is open to those with many kinds of disabilities, not excluding physical ones. This is Allen’s first year and she has achieved significant success due to her hard work and the help of those around her. When asked what her favorite part of cheering is, she said: “I love to dance!”
Practicing one day a week with her big sisters and coach, she has made big improvements, with her mother, Alison, saying: “When we first started coming here, Ali had trouble doing a front roll, now she is working on cartwheels. We’re really proud of her.”
