Community Foundation announces scholarships available

MASON COUNTY — The Community Foundation of Mason County is now accepting applications for 2017 scholarships. The application deadline for the 2017 community scholarships is March 1.

The Foundation uses a general application form for all of the scholarships. This application form is available at the guidance counselor’s office at the Mason County High Schools and at the Community Foundation of Mason County located at 2212 Jackson Avenue, Point Pleasant, in the City National Bank building.

The following scholarships are available:

Point Pleasant High School Alumni Association Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of Point Pleasant High School and Mason County resident.

• Must be pursuing a full time degree at a two-year or four-year accredited college or university.

• Minimum grade point average of 3.0.

• Selection based on academic excellence, leadership abilities, good moral character, and a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

GFWC Woman’s Club of Pt. Pleasant Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of any Mason County High School and Mason County resident. (Preference given to PPHS graduates.)

• Minimum grade point average of 2.5.

• Selection based on financial need, leadership skills, and active participation in community service during high school with preference given to financial need if all criterion is equal among applicants.

• Must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution in WV as full-time student. (Students attending an out of state institution are eligible to apply if the degree they are pursuing is not offered at a WV college or university.)

Mason County Chamber of Commerce

• Graduates or graduating seniors of Mason County High Schools.

• Minimum grade point average of 2.0.

• Selection based on financial need, community service, leadership qualities, and participation in school activities, with an emphasis on co-curricular and community service learning activities.

• Previous recipients of this scholarship may reapply for consideration with new applicants.

Mary Jo Cochran Memorial Scholarship

• Female graduating seniors who reside in Mason County, (including Christ Academy students).

• Must be pursuing a degree at a four-year college or university as a full-time student.

• Minimum grade point average of 3.3.

• Selection based on academic excellence; leadership qualities; good moral character; and financial need.

Jack and Babs Fruth Scholarship

• Graduating senior from any Mason County High School.

• Must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution in WV as a full-time student.

• May be pursuing associates degree or four-year degree.

• Selection based on academics (minimum 3.5 GPA), financial need, community service.

Jackson Scholarship

• Graduating senior or previous graduate from a Mason County High School.

• Must be planning to attend an accredited educational institution.

• Selection based on financial need, academic achievement or potential, and leadership abilities.

• Preference given to students with strong record of community service and school activities.

Angela “Charlie” Lilly Memorial Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of a Mason County High School and Mason County resident.

• Must be a full time student pursuing a four year degree in education at a college or university.

• Preference given to students with financial need.

Nedra Wilhelm Jones Memorial Scholarship

• Female graduating seniors who reside in Mason County. Previous recipients of the scholarship may also apply.

• Must be pursuing a degree at a four-year college or university as a full-time student and majoring in education or political science.

• Minimum grade point average of 3.0.

• Selection based on academic achievement, financial need, community service.

• Previous recipients of this scholarship may reapply for consideration with new applicants.

Mason County Community Foundation Scholarship

• Must be Mason County resident.

• Must be a graduating High school senior or current undergraduate enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution.

• May be pursuing a two-year or four-year undergraduate degree or a vocational or technical program.

• Must have minimum 2.0 GPA.

• Selection based on financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in school and community activities; preference to students not already receiving other significant scholarship support, including the WV Promise Scholarship.

Benjamin E. Snead and Julia D. Snead Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of Point Pleasant High School and current residents of Mason County. Previous recipients of the scholarship may also re-apply and be considered with new applicants.

• Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

• Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at a four-year college or university.

• Selection based on academic achievement and financial need.

• Preference will be given, but not limited to students attending West Virginia University, George Washington University, Penn State University, New York University, University of Michigan, University of South Carolina, and Vermont Law School.

• Previous recipients of this scholarship may reapply for consideration with new applicants.

Gordon C. & Mildred R. Jackson Scholarship Fund

• Graduating seniors or previous graduate of a Mason County High School and Mason County resident.

• Must be planning to attend an accredited educational institution.

• Preference given to students with a strong record of community service and school activities.

• Selection based on financial need, academic achievement, or potential leadership abilities.

• Can be considered for renewal with submission of completed renewal form received by deadline- scholarship limit up to 5 years of support.

Preece Family Scholarship in Memory of Homer and Novia Preece

• Graduating seniors or currently enrolled undergraduates in the College of Health Professions at any Marshall University Campus who are residents of Mason & Mingo counties or Gallia and Meigs Coutines in Ohio.

• Preference given to residents of Mason or Mingo counties.

• Must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

• High School Seniors must be accepted into the College of Health Professions at Marshall University and must plan to be a full time student.

• If applicant is currently admitted as undergraduate, applicant must be admitted in a degree program in the College of Health Professions and must be an active full time undergraduate pursuing a four year degree at any Marshall University campus.

• Selection based on financial need with preference given to those who have participated in community service activities, have demonstrated leadership skills, and possess a strong work ethic.

Andrea Bailes Honorary Scholarship Fund

• Graduating seniors of Point Pleasant High School and Mason County resident.

• Must be pursuing certification at a vocational or technical school or pursuing two year or a four year degree at a college or university.

• Must have a 2.0 GPA.

• Selection based on participation in extra-curricular activities and community service, demonstrating a well-rounded student.

Mel P. Simon, M.D. & Simon Family Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of a Mason County High School and Mason County resident and/or Gallia County, Ohio.

• Must be accepted in a health science program and completed college course credits equivalent to at least a junior undergraduate status.

• Preference given to students who have participated in community service, demonstrated leadership skills, possess a strong work ethic and have financial need.

Lois Shinn Memorial Scholarship

• Graduating seniors of a Mason County High School and Mason County resident.

• Preference to students who have attended Leon Elementary School.

• Must be a full time student pursuing a four year degree in education at a college or university.

• Selection based on academic achievement and financial need.

• Preference given to students with financial need, strong work ethic and demonstrated leadership skills.

• Must have a 3.0 grade point average.

• Previous recipients of this scholarship may reapply for consideration with new applicants.
