POINT PLEASANT — It is one of the highest honors a high school chorus member can achieve, and 16 members of the Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School Choir captured the award recently.

Eight members of the senior high, and the same number of junior high choir members, were chosen to represent the school as participants of All-State Choir.

According to Crystal Hendricks, choir director at Point Pleasant, the school had the possibility of seating eight members (the maximum allowed) on each All-State Choir, based on the number of members in each local group. The junior high choir at PPJ/SHS has 135 members, and there are 235 members overall for junior and senior high.

Even though it is a difficult task for all members trying out to achieve the success, it happened for the Point Pleasant students. Hendricks said the larger the number in the group, the harder the audition process.

The senior high school All-State Choir members were chosen last week. Selected from Point Pleasant were Nick Newell, Madisyn Boswell, Bryce Tayengco, Jacob Shull, Gracie Cottrill, Salem Russell, Chase Denny, and Cierra Porter.

Each of the eight singers chosen are also members of the school’s show ensemble that has been selected to perform at Universal Studios in June, Hendricks said. They are also members of the vocal ensemble.

As members of All-State Choir, they will join with the other singers from across the state to perform on March 4 at 1 p.m. at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium. The performance will be a part of the West Virginia Music Educators Association Conference that occurs March 2-4.

Point Pleasant singers chosen for the West Virginia Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association Junior High All-State Choir were Olivia Boggess, Taylor Tatterson, Avery Richardson, Zoe Enos, Blake Towe, Josh Towe, C.J. Thornton and Cohen Yates.

They attended the ACDA conference in Charleston on Jan. 26-28, where they performed with other vocal students throughout the state before a large audience.
