MASON — A new member has been appointed to the Mason town council, following the recent resignation of another.
During last week’s meeting, Sharon Kearns was appointed to the council, according to Mayor Donna Dennis. She will replace Ron Heath, whose resignation was accepted on Oct. 20. Kearns will remain on council until the next election, set for 2017.
Employee health insurance was also discussed during the meeting. The mayor said employees at the present time are covered by a town policy, but the council is revisiting the policy to see what the additional cost would be to offer the insurance to spouses and/or families. The employee would be responsible for paying the additional premium.
An update was given on the ongoing water project. Although the water line portion of the project is nearing an end, work on the tank rehabilitation continues and should be completed by the end of November. It was found during the project that the tank needed a new roof. Mayor Dennis stated there is money in the project funding to cover the extra expense.
In other action, the council:
Agreed to give employees incentive bonuses according to hours worked and years of service;
Heard from resident Cheryl Lake as to changes she is planning for her property;
Agreed to hire Travis Nance as a full-time employee, with a 90-day probationary period;
Approved a $100 boot allowance for full-time water and sewer department employees; and,
Approved a budget revision for the police department.
The next council meeting will be held Nov. 17.
