The Pleasant Community Educational Outreach Service met in November at the courthouse annex with the meeting called to order by President Clinedda Austin.
Marylin Higginbotham presented the Health Motivator Lesson entitled “Talking Turkey” which was written by Loren Wells, WVU Extension Agent in Wyoming and McDowell counties and Dana Wright, WVU Extension Agent in Logan and Mingo Counties.
The lesson emphasized that traditional Thanksgiving foods are high in carbs and to have a small portion of your favorites and pass on the rest. The lesson gave suggestions for substitutes for high sodium and high calorie foods.
A new project of providing a small free library in the community was discussed. Plans were made for a workshop to make craft kits for the then upcoming Holiday Workshop. Pleasant Club was responsible for the activities at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Rehap Center Nov. 14.
On Dec. 8, the club met for its Christmas Party at the Golden Corral in Gallipolis, Ohio. Cash donations were made to Lakin Hospital and Point Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department. Garden calendars for 2017 were presented by Lorrie Wright, WVU Extension Agent for Mason County. A donation was also made to the New Hope Baptist Church for the use of their facilities for the Holiday Workshop.
Clinedda Austin read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” which had been converted into a left/right game with each participant receiving a nice gift. Two other games were played: “Open It” if you can and a Merry Beary Christmas.
In attendance: Clinedda Austin, Catherine Yauger, Brenda Schultze, Linda Craig, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Nibert, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Litchfield, Marylin Higginbotham, Garnet Schwarz, Lorrie Wright, Frankie Bumgarner.
