A juvenile has been charged with felony murder in the shooting death of his father. The dead man is identified as Michael P. Riley, 48, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his office is currently investigating a fatal shooting which occurred around 3:56 p.m. Sunday at a residence located at 678 Disterdick Road, in Franklin Furnace. Donini said his office received a 911 call from a residence on Junior Road in Franklin Furnace. He said the caller stated that a juvenile male showed up at his house stating that he had shot his father. Deputies, along with EMS, responded to 678 Disterdick Road, where they located a deceased male, later identified Riley. Riley had suffered from an apparent gunshot wound.
Detectives responded to the location to process the scene, the juvenile male was detained from the residence on Junior Road and transported to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
After a preliminary investigation, detectives arrested a 14-year-old male, identified as the son of the victim. After consulting with the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office the juvenile male has been charged with one count of murder, a felony of the first degree and is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center located in Ross county.
“The kid told us he had just been pushed to the point with the verbal abuse and he had just had enough,” Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall told the Daily Times. “It’s sad because he’s a nice looking young man.”
The decision as to whether to try the juvenile as an adult or not will most likely be made by Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn along with Scioto County Juvenile Judge James Kirsch.
Donini said more charges could be presented at a later time.
Donini said it is an ongoing investigation and anybody with information should contact Detective Jodi Conkel at 740-351-1091.
