POINT PLEASANT — Donnie Jones, head basketball coach at the University of Central Florida, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Recognition Dinner.
Jones is a native of Point Pleasant and a former head basketball coach at Marshall University. He is also a former assistant basketball coach at both the University of Florida and his alma mater, Pikeville College in Kentucky. While an assistant at Florida, Jones helped current head coach Billy Donovan coach the Gators to consecutive national championships in 2006 and 2007.
Jones earned his bachelor’s degree in business education from Pikeville in 1988 and received his master’s degree in sports management from Marshall in 1992. Jones had a stellar college playing career at Pikeville, recording a school-record 513 career assists. As a senior, he finished second nationally in the NAIA with 10.7 assists per game.
Jones and his wife, Michelle, have three children: Madisyn Michelle, Sofie Louise and Donald Isaac.
This year’s annual recognition dinner is April 21 at Trinity UM Methodist Church’s Community Building with Brad Deal Catering serving the meal. Farmers Bank is providing the reception.
In addition to Jones speaking, the chamber will honor those who have made a positive impression in their communities over the past year. The annual recognition dinner is one of the chamber’s biggest fundraisers of the year.
Hilda Austin, chamber executive director, also announced the March luncheon of the Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce is at noon March 25 at the Mason County Library. Guest speakers will be Matt Shielder and Buck Davis from AT& T Cellutions of Jefferson Avenue. Subway is catering the luncheon.
