POINT PLEASANT — Renae Riffle, director of the Mason County Senior Center, is introducing several new programs for the center’s 2014 line-up.
These programs are for people of any age, though, Riffle noted.
A “Care-giver Coffee Break,” especially for those who are responsible for the care of any loved one. The group meets at 5 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Mason County Action Group in Point Pleasant. The idea is for people to come and talk to others who are in similar situations, pick up tips, and just take a break from the daily grind. Carol Matheny runs the group and may be reached at (304)941-1950.
January is Self-Defense Awareness Month, and in view of that, the senior center has lined up a fitting event. Master Pam Siders of the Kang’s Tae Kwon Do Academy will do a demonstration at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14 at the senior center. A few of Siders’ students will be present as well to show off their skills. In a similar vein, the martial art Tai Chi will be offered this month and is expected to continue through the year.
Riffle has also arranged to have speakers on various topics such as fraud prevention, legal aid, diabetes, and medical management. Free health screenings will also be available for blood pressure, blood sugar, vision and eye exams. Regularly scheduled activities such as bingo, exercise classes and meals for seniors will go on as usual. Meals are served beginning at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday at all three senior centers, located in Point Pleasant, Mason, and Hartford. Bingo is held on Mondays and Fridays at 10 a.m.; an exercise class at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7.
The center also provides in-home care, transportation, and home-delivered meals. As a severe weather guideline, Riffle noted, the Mason County School serve to indicate center closures. When the Mason County Schools are closed, the senior center is also closed.
For more information on the above programs and others, the center may be reached at (304)675-2369.
