POINT PLEASANT — Twelve teams and more than 130 participants have registered for this Saturday’s Mason County Relay for Life, said Jennifer Davis.
Davis, senior community manager for the American Cancer Society, said that the event is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, September 21, at Point Pleasant High School, and is expected to last until 11 p.m. Last year, Davis said, Mason County Relay raised $46,000; this year’s goal is $48,000. Among other attractions, the event will offer food, games, prizes and live entertainment.
Davis said that local volunteers are a major part of the nationwide effort, but that more people are still needed for the progress to continue.
“There are still many people battling a cancer diagnosis and many others who are lending support alongside loved ones every day,” Davis said. “These realities make the dollars donated and volunteer hours devoted to the American Cancer Society – a part of Mason County for many years – critically important.”
The money raised at Relay, Davis said, helps the American Cancer Society deliver on its mission of helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back against the disease.
“Relay provides the ACS with money to support vital, cutting-edge cancer research; provides cancer patients with free wigs, transportation to treatment, free lodging at our Hope Lodge, and publishes lifesaving literature on cancer prevention, detection and tobacco control; and develops a new generation of medicines that help those battling cancer.”
Davis said that she is looking for individuals, families, community groups, corporations and small businesses to commit their Relay For Life team participation.
“Join us at this event to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those lost, fight back against the disease, and help the American Cancer Society realize its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays, ” Davis said.
