MASON COUNTY — With just a little over two weeks left until the general election, nearly 19,000 voters in Mason County are registered to cast their ballots.

Tuesday was the last day to register to vote on Nov. 6 or change party affiliation. According to the office of Mason County Clerk Diana Cromley, as of Friday, there were 18,985 registered voters in Mason County.

Of those registered voters, 9,831 are Democrats, 6,185 are Republicans, 314 are Independents, 2,624 belong to no party, there are eight Libertarians, 16 Mountain Party members, four Green Party members and three voters which fall into the “other” category.

The Democrats remain the majority in Mason County though with 314 Independents and 2,624 no party voters registered, it’s anybody’s guess who will walk away the winners of some hotly contested races.

Local races of particular interest around the county include sheriff, county commission, assessor and prosecuting attorney. Candidates running for these races, as well as candidates running for W.Va. House of Delegates in the 13th and 14th Districts and state senate in the fourth district, will be featured in an upcoming special election supplement to the Point Pleasant Register which will be on the stands on Friday, Oct. 26. Other candidates and races will be featured in upcoming print editions in the Point Pleasant Register.

Voters get their first chance to cast their ballots on Oct. 24 which is the first day of early voting in West Virginia. Early voting times and dates in Mason County are as follows: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Oct. 24-26; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Oct. 27; 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Oct. 29 - Nov. 2; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Nov. 3. All early voting is done on the second floor of the Mason County Courthouse in the county commission room.

This week, a public test of the early voting machines was conducted with the test being successful according to Cromley.

Of course, if voters can’t make early voting, the polls at Mason County’s 30 precincts open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6
