Fair parade set for Saturday

July 31, 2012

POINT PLEASANT — This Saturday’s Mason County Fair Parade could be the biggest yet and will have its first ever grand marshal, West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass.

Douglass is originally from Mason County and fair officials felt it fitting to honor him in his last year as agriculture commissioner.

Mason County Fair and parade officials say they estimate having 75 individual entries at this point with more people calling to register. Registration is not required (it just helps organizers get a feel for where to put everyone) and those wishing to participate can just show up the day of the parade.

This year’s Mason County Fair Parade takes place at noon, Saturday, Aug. 4. The parade will start at the Point Pleasant Register on Second and Main Streets and end at the Mason County Schools Central Office on 11th Street. Lineup starts at 9:30 a.m. near The Point Pleasant Register office. Also, there will be parade entry judging from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. with out of town judges picking the winners.

Trophies will be awarded to the best decorated 4-H float, best decorated Cloverbud float, best decorated Boy Scout float, best decorated Girl Scout float, most unique float, best dressed horse, best tractor and best car.

“We want this to be the biggest parade in the county,” Shayla Blackshire, one of the parade organizers said. “The number of people who have called to register have been ‘unbelievale.’”

Brian Billings, another parade organizer, said many of the 4-H groups and churches are also participating this year. He added, all three high school bands will be performing in the parade and even a tour bus from the new Bend Area tours company will make an appearance. Parade goers can also expect a variety of pageant royalty, fair queen candidates and politicians (after all, it is an election year).

Interested participants may call Brian Billings at 304-675-6633, 304-675-2360; Kevin Durst, 304-593-2544; Shayla Blackshire, 304-895-8830; or the fair office at 304-675-5463.
